Nevşehir Castle

The Nevşehir Castle is of great importance as it was used as a stop/guardhouse for the protection of the old Roman road and Baghdad Silk Road. According to its inscription, it was used during the Seljuk’s, Karamanids and Ottoman Empire since the Byzantine period. Kurşunlu Mosque, soup-kitchens, mosques, madrasahs, caravanserais, fountains and houses were built in this newly established city in the time of Damat İbrahim Pasha. It is known that the castle was also repaired in the same period. Finally, it was restored in 1979 by General Directorate of Ancient Arts and Museums in the Republic Period. Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University made a scientific research excavation in the castle in 2018. Restoration works will be carried out by Nevşehir Municipality in 2021.

The height of the rock on which the bastion stands (altitude) is 1343 meters and covers an area of 1430 square meters. The polygonal castle has 42 murder-holes, 4 bastions, 2 gates in the east and west. The ramparts of the castle are usually made of basalt stones in the area. During the restoration works realized, murder-holes, windows and doorframes are built of Nevşehir yellow stones.
