Rock-Cut Church

Rock-Cut Church

A rock-cut church with a single nave and decorated with wall paintings from the Late Medieval period was unearthed on December 16, 2015 during the cleaning works carried out by Nevşehir Municipality under the presidency of the Nevşehir Archaeology Museum. The rock church dating back to the Byzantine period is a complex since it is intertwined with structures such as cemetery area, multi-layered graves, and ritual area. The depictions of Saint Antipas and other saints of the period in addition to the biblical depictions on the wall paintings inside the rock church show that this church is contemporary with the church No. 1 of Tatlarin in terms of architectural and stylistic features. Therefore, it is possible to give the date range of 1215-1217 for the construction of the rock-cut church.
