Rock Chamber With Cross Relief

Rock Chamber With Cross Relief

This lectorium room with a cross embossed on the rock is one of the oldest places in the area and it bears the traces of the Roman period in terms of its architectural features. Although there is no written source, it is considered to be the place where the rituals are performed. Especially after the death of senior clergymen, a special ceremony is held by sitting them on a chair with their clothes, kept in a secret burial chamber for a certain period of time and buried at the end of this period. During this waiting period, the belief that the soul of the dead person will complete his journey and find peace is dominant. This lectorium room is extremely important in that it can be seen only in this settlement in the Cappadocia region. In the continuation of this room, there are multi-layered rock graves in the feature of catacombs with a low tunnel. In later times, additional rooms were added around it and used for different purposes in line with the requirements.
