Stables

Stables

In many points of the rock-carved settlement, there are stables where the people shelter their animals. Apart from these personal stables, it is extremely important that horse stables, which are public space known to be used for military purposes, have been unearthed. As this settlement has been located on the trade route since 2000 BC, there is a possibility that it might be a resting and accommodation point for the caravans of approximately 200-250 people. The horse stables with high mangers where nearly 100 camels or horses could be sheltered at the same time suggest that this rock-carved settlement was once used as a caravanserai. In addition, this rock settlement, located at the intersection of trade routes, also played the role of ensuring the security of caravans. For this reason, the existence of horse stables proves that it was used as a military garrison. This public-function area was used as junior high school (rüştiye) in Ottoman period and as primary school in the Republic period with the additional structures according to the information received from the archives.
